This two-year project will make it easier for producers to set up their own farm research trials.
On-farm research can help answer production questions and increase resilience to the challenging and/or extreme conditions anticipated to result from climate change, such as drought.
The project will establish on-farm trials in partnership with 3-4 farmers in the Kootenay & Boundary region. Each trial will explore a different practice/production system, for example, using deep-rooted tillage radish in forage mixes to adapt to drought conditions or using mulches to increase water use efficiency in cherry orchards.
These on-farm trials will also serve as case studies to assist in developing written guides that will walk producers through the process of defining research questions, designing an effective trial, collecting information and evaluating results.
Field days will share the trials and sample research projects with local producers. The guides are expected to be available by fall of 2020.
