Increasing summer temperatures and decreasing precipitation due to climate change are expected to increase the risk of wildfire in the Cariboo in the future. Wildfires threaten immediate agricultural production capacity and many agricultural operations in the Cariboo exist beyond the urban/wildfire interface area where the bulk of limited fire mitigation resources have been focused. Developing agriculture-specific resources and plans to strengthen wildfire preparedness, mitigation and recovery was a priority in the Cariboo Adaptation Strategies.
This project piloted development of individual farm plans, as well as collaborative planning with producers facing wildfire risk. The individual farm plan process identifies the risks, gaps and concerns faced by individual producers and the resources inventory details available resources. Two collaborative planning workshops engaged groups of producers in close proximity, with the underlying objective of improving fire mitigation, preparedness and recovery, as well as enhancing communication between key fire management and response agencies and the agriculture sector. Costs, issues and barriers around implementation of mitigation measures are also identified in the Opportunities and Barriers report.
A subsequent project in the Okanagan integrated the strongest elements of the Cowichan emergency planning template with new modules and content to create a comprehensive farm-level Wildfire Preparedness and Mitigation Planning Workbook and Guide for use by all types of agricultural operations. This workbook and guide consists of a series of modules focusing on planning/activities to undertake before a wildfire, during a wildfire and after a wildfire and includes extensive sections for livestock operations. Cariboo producers are encouraged to use the provincial template when preparing their farm-level wildfire preparedness plan, which can be found at the available at the Okanagan Planning & Information Exchange for Wildfire Impact Reduction project page.
