Fraser Valley – Fraser Valley Agricultural Water Supply Assessment [fv09]
|Status||approved: Oct 2019 to Apr 2020|
|Project Lead||BC Dairy Association|
|Funding Partners||Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, BC Ministry of Agriculture, City of Chilliwack|
|Other Partners||Agricultural producers|
This project will conduct a high-level assessment of agricultural water supply and management vulnerabilities in the Fraser Valley, in relation to future climate conditions. The assessment will be based on existing information and will also help identify gaps, issues of concern and areas of opportunity.
Increasingly warm and dry summers in the region will result in greater irrigation demand from farms already irrigating and will reduce the productivity of unirrigated land. Agricultural water is drawn from multiple sources, and the impacts of climate change will vary by geography, supply source and production system.
This project will:
- identify water resource information/knowledge gaps and issues of concern
- summarize recent water supply and quality challenges facing agricultural producers
- analyze climate change impacts and water supply/demand projections
- identify key hot spots: geographic areas or specific supply resources that are likely to be particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts
