Kootenay & Boundary – Tools & Resources for On-Farm Water Conservation [kb02]
|Region||Kootenay & Boundary|
|Status||approved: Dec 2019 to Nov 2021|
|Project Lead||Kootenay Livestock Association|
|Funding Partners||Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, BC Ministry of Agriculture, Columbia Basin Trust|
|Other Partners||Kootenay & Boundary Farm Advisors|
This project will develop a series of resources to support producers in the Kootenay & Boundary region with optimizing irrigation and conserving water on their farms.
As summer temperatures increase and summers become drier, improving water management practices and irrigation efficiency on farms will support productivity while preserving water resources to ensure that water is consistently available when needed.
This project will develop a series of practical informational resources for producers. Some resources will transfer existing knowledge about irrigation efficiency and soil moisture preservation through accessible and user-friendly formats and materials, such as fact sheets and field days. Additional resources will evolve out of demonstration projects with local producers that collect and share farm-level data to quantify the costs and benefits of various water management practices.
This project will:
- improve the quality and availability of water-management and irrigation efficiency resources available to producers
- support producers in improving their irrigation efficiency through a suite of knowledge transfer tools that will be accessible through multiple mediums and channels
- conduct local applied research to fill knowledge/data gaps relating to benefits of on-farm water management practices and share the findings with producers
