Okanagan – Wildfire Pre-Season Communication & Information Exchange Pilot Project [ok09]
|Status||in progress: Nov 2018 to Dec 2020|
|Project Lead||Southern Interior Stockmens' Association|
|Funding Partners||Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, BC Ministry of Agriculture|
|Other Partners||Regional District Okanagan Similkameen, Regional District Central Okanagan|
This project will develop and pilot an agriculture wildfire communication plan to guide wildfire-related communication between the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) and the agriculture sector. While the plan will be tailored to the RDOS, project materials will be made available to other regional districts for their customization and implementation.
Climate change is resulting in conditions that contribute to more frequent, extensive and intensive wildfires. Concise and easy-to-access information about wildfire status will enable producers to make timely decisions about livestock relocation, harvest dates, produce storage and more.
This project will build on the communication plan framework outlined in an earlier CAI project to identify and implement specific actions to strengthen annual wildfire-related communication.
This project will:
- facilitate pre- and post-wildfire season meetings with representatives from major agricultural organizations and response agencies
- develop and improve a communication plan and supporting materials
- enable agricultural organizations and key agencies to exchange relevant information and build relationships
