Peace – Weather Monitoring Network Enhancement [pc09]
|Status||approved: Apr 2020 to Dec 2021|
|Project Lead||BC Forage Seed Association|
|Funding Partners||Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, BC Ministry of Agriculture, The BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund|
This project will enhance the agricultural weather monitoring network in the Peace region through the addition of localized weather forecasting, improvements to the online platform and development of a maintenance and funding plan for long-term network sustainability.
Climate change is increasing uncertainty about the timing, extent and frequency of variable and extreme conditions. Accurate weather data helps producers with effective management decisions, including precision management of crop inputs and pest management treatments. Availability of long-term local weather data records also supports more confidence in crop/variety selection and in adapting production systems to changing conditions.
An earlier CAI project assessed the weather data availability and priorities in the region, and a subsequent project supported the installation of 16 stations and a new agricultural network website to share weather data and tools. This project will strengthen these existing network services and complete the transition to an effective local delivery model.
This project will:
- assess the functionality and utility of the existing network
- identify and implement improvements, including local weather forecasting
- enhance familiarity with, and increase use of, the network among agricultural producers in the Peace region
- ensure the functionality and utility of the weather network system is sustained into the future
